    Decoherence by a nonlinear environment: canonical vs. microcanonical case

    Get PDF
    We compare decoherence induced in a simple quantum system (qubit) for two different initial states of the environment: canonical (fixed temperature) and microcanonical (fixed energy), for the general case of a fully interacting oscillator environment. We find that even a relatively compact oscillator bath (with the effective number of degrees of freedom of order 10), initially in a microcanonical state, will typically cause decoherence almost indistinguishable from that by a macroscopic, thermal environment, except possibly at singularities of the environment's specific heat (critical points). In the latter case, the precise magnitude of the difference between the canonical and microcanonical results depends on the critical behavior of the dissipative coefficient, characterizing the interaction of the qubit with the environment.Comment: 18 pages, revtex, 2 figures; minor textual changes, corrected typo in eq. Detailed balance condition and ultraviolet stability of scalar field in Horava-Lifshitz gravity

    Full text link
    Detailed balance and projectability conditions are two main assumptions when Horava recently formulated his theory of quantum gravity - the Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory. While the latter represents an important ingredient, the former often believed needs to be abandoned, in order to obtain an ultraviolet stable scalar field, among other things. In this paper, because of several attractive features of this condition, we revisit it, and show that the scalar field can be stabilized, if the detailed balance condition is allowed to be softly broken. Although this is done explicitly in the non-relativistic general covariant setup of Horava-Melby-Thompson with an arbitrary coupling constant λ\lambda, generalized lately by da Silva, it is also true in other versions of the HL theory. With the detailed balance condition softly breaking, the number of independent coupling constants can be still significantly reduced. It is remarkable to note that, unlike other setups, in this da Silva generalization, there exists a master equation for the linear perturbations of the scalar field in the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background.Comment: Some typos are corrected. Order parameter oscillations in Fe/Ag/Bi2Sr2CaCu2O{8+delta} tunnel junctions

    Full text link
    We have performed temperature dependent tunneling conductance spectroscopy on Fe/Ag/Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO) planar junctions. The multilayered Fe counterelectrode was designed to probe the proximity region of the ab-plane of BSCCO. The spectra manifested a coherent oscillatory behavior with magnitude and sign dependent on the energy, decaying with increasing distance from the junction barrier, in conjunction with the theoretical predictions involving d-wave superconductors coupled with ferromagnets. The conductance oscillates in antiphase at E = 0 and E = +/-Delta. Spectral features characteristic to a broken time-reversal pairing symmetry are detected and they do not depend on the geometrical characteristics of the ferromagnetic film.Comment: 4 pages and 4 figures Submitted to Physical Review Letter

    Connecting Berry's phase and the pumped charge in a Cooper pair pump

    Full text link
    The properties of the tunnelling-charging Hamiltonian of a Cooper pair pump are well understood in the regime of weak and intermediate Josephson coupling, i.e. when EJECE_{\mathrm{J}}\lesssim E_{\mathrm{C}}. It is also known that Berry's phase is related to the pumped charge induced by the adiabatical variation of the eigenstates. We show explicitly that pumped charge in Cooper pair pump can be understood as a partial derivative of Berry's phase with respect to the phase difference ϕ\phi across the array. The phase fluctuations always present in real experiments can also be taken into account, although only approximately. Thus the measurement of the pumped current gives reliable, yet indirect, information on Berry's phase. As closing remarks, we give the differential relation between Berry's phase and the pumped charge, and state that the mathematical results are valid for any observable expressible as a partial derivative of the Hamiltonian.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, RevTeX, Presentation has been clarifie

    Effects of La substitution on superconducting state of CeCoIn5

    Full text link
    We report effects of La substitution on superconducting state of heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5, as seen in transport and magnetization measurements. As opposed to the case of conventional superconductors, pair breaking by nonmagnetic La results in depression of Tc and indicates strong gap anisotropy. Upper critical field Hc2 values decrease with increased La concentration, but the critical field anisotropy, gamma=Hc2(a)/Hc2(c), does not change in the Ce_{1-x}La_xCoIn5 (x=0-0.15). The electronic system is in the clean limit for all values of x.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Probing the superconducting gap symmetry of PrRu4_{4}Sb12_{12}: A comparison with PrOs4_{4}Sb12_{12}

    Full text link
    We report measurements of the magnetic penetration depth λ\lambda in single crystals of PrRu4_{4}Sb12_{12} down to 0.1 K. Both λ\lambda and superfluid density ρs\rho_{s} exhibit an exponential behavior for TT << 0.5TcT_{c}, with parameters Δ\Delta(0)/\textit{k}B_{B}\textit{T}c_{c} = 1.9 and λ(0)\lambda(0) = 2900 \AA. The value of Δ\Delta(0) is consistent with the specific-heat jump value of ΔC/γTc\Delta C/\gamma T_{c} = 1.87 measured elsewhere, while the value of λ(0)\lambda(0) is consistent with the measured value of the electronic heat-capacity coefficient γ\gamma. Our data are consistent with PrRu4_{4}Sb12_{12} being a moderate-coupling, fully-gapped superconductor. We suggest experiments to study how the nature of the superconducting state evolves with increasing Ru substitution for Os
